NEWPORT (Ark.) – With the launch of its first intercollegiate sports programs, Arkansas State University-Newport will utilize local facilities for its home games. ASU-Newport recently announced its acceptance into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
"We're excited to partner with these great facilities in Newport and provide our student-athletes with quality venues to showcase their skills and represent ASU-Newport," said Chancellor Dr. Johnny M. Moore. "ASUN is a community college. It's fitting we can work with our community leaders to launch this new endeavor, further highlighting the strength of support we have in Newport and Jackson County."
The fieldhouse at Newport High School, located at 406 Wilkerson St., has a spacious indoor arena that accommodates up to 1,145 spectators. The facility features a hardwood court, an electronic scoreboard and modern amenities.
"We're proud to host ASU-Newport's basketball team and look forward to seeing the community come out to support the home team," said Newport School District Superintendent John Bradley.
George Kell Park, located at 300 S. Oak St., is an outdoor complex with multiple baseball and softball fields, a concession stand and batting cages. The park is named after George Kell, a Hall of Fame baseball player from Newport.
"We're excited to welcome ASU-Newport's softball team to our park and provide them with a top-notch playing surface," said Mayor Derrick Ratliffe. "We hope to see some competitive games and good sportsmanship."
ASU-Newport's men's basketball team will debut at the Newport High School fieldhouse gym, and the softball team will have its first home game at George Kell Park in the 2023-2024 academic year.
