Aviator History

The Aviator mascot symbolizes the college's connection to its past and embodies the spirit of determination, teamwork, and perseverance. It represents the legacy of those who served at the airbase and reflects the college's commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

The history of athletics at ASU-Newport began with the approval of athletics by the board of trustees in June 2022. This marked an exciting development for the college and its students, as it would provide an avenue for athletic competition and school spirit.

Recognizing the need for organized sports programs, the Chancellor, Dr. Johnny M. Moore, took immediate action and formed an athletics task force in the fall of 2022. The task force was tasked with the responsibility of charting the course for the college's athletic program, including determining the sports to be introduced and establishing the necessary infrastructure.

In the spring of 2023, ASU-Newport made the decision to add men's basketball and women's softball to its athletics program. This choice was made after careful consideration of the popularity and feasibility of these sports at the college. Men's basketball and women's softball would provide opportunities for students to showcase their athletic talents and represent ASU-Newport in intercollegiate competitions.

To lead the newly established athletics department, ASU-Newport hired Brad Phillips as the college's first athletic director. Phillips brought with him a wealth of experience and a passion for developing a strong athletic program at the college. As the athletic director, he was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the athletics department, including hiring coaches, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with regulations.

With the addition of men's basketball, ASU-Newport needed a skilled and dedicated coach to lead the team. Logan Nutt was selected as the first men's basketball coach, bringing his expertise and enthusiasm to the position. Nutt's primary responsibility was to build a competitive basketball program, recruit talented players, and guide the team to success on the court.

Similarly, Kevin Pearce was hired as the women's softball coach, responsible for developing a strong and competitive softball team. Pearce's experience and knowledge of the game played a crucial role in shaping the women's softball program at ASU-Newport.

The Aviator continues to serve as a symbol of pride, unity, and the college's connection to its historical roots. ASU-Newport's athletics program has since grown and flourished, with the Aviators proudly representing the college in intercollegiate competitions and fostering a strong sense of school spirit among students, faculty, and fans. The history of athletics at ASU-Newport is a testament to the college's commitment to providing a well-rounded educational experience, both in the classroom and on the field of play.
